When I’m not eating or taking pictures, I actually do this stuff:
Environmental Graphic Design.
Instead of picking paper samples for my design, I have to figure out how that design is going to exist in a 3d environment. Materials, ADA-Compliancy… That cut aluminum lettering with halo illumination? I have to draw up a cross section for the fabricator. Then I have to place all the signs on a site plan, in the right place, or pedestrians will get lost. I have the power to direct them into a wall or onto oncoming traffic.
Super fun stuff, because what I do will be up FOREVER.
Or until a building gets demolished or burned down.
Anyway. This is why I’m still here, at work… I’m getting high spray mounting some presentation boards for a meeting with LA City College tomorrow morning, picking out fonts and for their signage and a design direction for some murals in their new multi-million dollar student union.
In a year or so, something I’ve helped design will be tangible and there forever.
Unless it sucks, then forget I mentioned my involvement.
